In this video we will quickly read from ” A sailors sketchbook of human and animal curiosities in early modern Amsterdam ”
It discusses an Advertisement in 1700 Amsterdam. The poster pictures a South American tapir that was on display at an Amsterdam inn called the White Oliphant, or White Elephant. The text in the Poster follows with a broad invitation “to all Gentlemen, Ladies,. Burghers, Merchants, and furthermore to alI Lovers of Animals” to come and see this rarity “which many writers say … does not exist anywhere in the world.” It had been “captured with great difficulty and cost in the River Euphrates in AMERICA.” !!
